Rwanda's gorilla trekking destination, home to mountain gorillas and volcanoes.
About Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda protects the Rwandan side of the Virunga Mountains, a chain of volcanoes straddling the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park is famous for its mountain gorilla population and offers some of the best gorilla trekking in Africa.
Rwanda has positioned itself as Africa's premier gorilla trekking destination. The park is home to 12 habituated gorilla families, and the trekking experience is exceptionally well-organized.
The park also protects the endangered golden monkey, a rare primate found only in the Virunga region. Tracking golden monkeys is an excellent complement to gorilla trekking.
The park's five volcanoes, Mount Karisimbi, Mount Bisoke, Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Muhabura, create dramatic scenery and offer challenging hiking opportunities.
