Maasai Mara Game Reserve

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is Africa's most celebrated wildlife destination, and for good reason. Spanning 1,510 square kilometers of rolling savanna in southwestern Kenya, the Mara is home to an extraordinary concentration of wildlife year-round.

The Mara's most famous spectacle is the Great Migration, when over two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles cross from Tanzania's Serengeti between July and October. The Mara River crossings, where crocodiles lie in wait and herds must summon courage to plunge into the churning waters, are among wildlife's most dramatic scenes.

The Maasai Mara is one of the few places in Africa where you can realistically see all the Big Five in a single day. Lions are abundant, with over 900 in the reserve. Leopards are frequently spotted in the riverine forests. Elephants roam in large herds, and both black and white rhinos can be found. Buffalo are everywhere, completing the Big Five checklist.

The Mara is arguably the best place in Africa for predator viewing. Cheetahs hunt on the open plains, lions patrol the grasslands, leopards lurk in the trees, and hyenas and wild dogs provide endless entertainment. The reserve's predator density is among the highest in the world.

With over 500 bird species, the Mara is a birdwatcher's dream. From massive ostriches to tiny sunbirds, from martial eagles to lilac-breasted rollers, the diversity of avian life is staggering.
