Ngorongoro Crater

The world's largest intact volcanic caldera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

About Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is a natural wonder and the world's largest intact volcanic caldera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This natural amphitheater, formed two to three million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed, shelters one of the densest wildlife concentrations in Africa.

Descending 600 meters into the crater is like entering another world. The 260-square-kilometer floor is home to approximately 30,000 animals, including the endangered black rhino, lions, elephants, hippos, and flocks of flamingos on the soda lake.

The crater's enclosed ecosystem means wildlife populations are relatively stable and concentrated. This makes Ngorongoro one of the best places in Africa to see the Big Five in a single game drive.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ngorongoro faces the challenge of balancing conservation with the needs of the Maasai people who have lived on the crater rim for generations. This delicate balance makes Ngorongoro a fascinating case study in conservation.
