Murchison Falls National Park

Uganda's largest park, home to the mighty Murchison Falls.

About Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest national park, covering 3,840 square kilometers of pristine wilderness. The park is named after the dramatic Murchison Falls, where the Nile River squeezes through a narrow gorge before plunging 43 meters.

The Nile River is the park's lifeblood, supporting huge concentrations of hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds. Boat cruises to the base of Murchison Falls offer spectacular wildlife viewing.

The park is home to elephants, giraffes, lions, leopards, buffalo, and the rare shoebill stork. The northern sector, above the falls, is particularly rich in wildlife.

Murchison Falls has a fascinating conservation history, from its establishment as a game reserve in 1926 to its current status as one of Uganda's most important protected areas.
