The term was coined by big-game hunters and refers to the five most difficult animals to hunt on foot. Today, it has been reclaimed by the safari industry as the five must-see animals.
The lion is found in the Maasai Mara, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater year-round, especially during the Great Migration. Lions are the only cats that live in social groups called prides. The Maasai Mara is home to over 900 lions, making it one of the best places in Africa to see these majestic predators. Look for them resting in the shade during the heat of the day or hunting at dawn and dusk.
The leopard is found in Samburu, Maasai Mara, and Sabi Sands year-round. Leopards are the most elusive of the Big Five. They are solitary, nocturnal, and incredibly well-camouflaged. Finding one requires a skilled guide and a bit of luck. Look for them draped in trees, where they often drag their kills to keep them safe from hyenas.
The rhinoceros can be found in Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Nakuru, and Ol Pejeta year-round. There are two species, black rhino and white rhino. Both are critically endangered. Rhinos are the most endangered of the Big Five, with fewer than 5,000 black rhinos and 18,000 white rhinos remaining in the wild. Seeing one is a privilege and a reminder of the importance of conservation.
The African elephant is found in Amboseli, Samburu, and Tarangire year-round. Elephants are the largest land animals on Earth. Amboseli National Park is famous for its large elephant herds, with some of Africa's largest tuskers roaming the plains. Watching elephants against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro is one of Africa's most iconic images.
The African buffalo can be found everywhere year-round. Despite their docile appearance, buffalo are considered one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. Buffalo are often overlooked by safari-goers focused on more glamorous species, but they are fascinating animals. Large herds can number in the hundreds, and their interactions with predators provide endless entertainment.
