Packing for an African safari requires careful planning. Too much and you will be weighed down, too little and you will be uncomfortable. After years of guiding safaris across East Africa, we have compiled this definitive packing list.
Neutral colored clothing is essential. Pack khaki, olive, tan, brown, and earth tones. Avoid white, black, bright colors, and camouflage patterns. Neutral colors help you blend into the bush and do not attract insects. White shows dirt instantly, black absorbs heat, and bright colors can startle wildlife.
Layered clothing is crucial because African temperatures can vary dramatically with cold mornings, hot middays, and cool evenings. Pack lightweight t-shirts for midday, a fleece or warm jacket for mornings and evenings, a waterproof rain jacket especially during green season, and a long-sleeved shirt for sun protection.
Comfortable walking shoes are a must. For game drives, bring comfortable sneakers or walking shoes. For walking safaris, bring sturdy hiking boots with ankle support. Your feet need to be comfortable for long days in the bush.
Sun protection is non-negotiable. The African sun is intense. Bring a wide-brimmed hat not a baseball cap, high-SPF sunscreen rated 50 or above, quality sunglasses with UV protection, and lip balm with SPF.
A good pair of binoculars will transform your safari experience. We recommend 8x42 or 10x42 models, powerful enough to see details but not so heavy that they become a burden.
For photography, bring a camera with a zoom lens of at least 200mm, extra batteries since cold mornings drain them faster, multiple memory cards since you will take more photos than you think, and a dust-proof camera bag.
DEET-based insect repellent rated 30 percent or higher is essential, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Apply to exposed skin and clothing.
Bring any prescription medications in their original packaging. Also pack anti-malaria medication after consulting your doctor, a basic first aid kit, hand sanitizer, and rehydration salts.
Keep copies of your passport valid for at least six months, visa with e-Visa recommended, travel insurance documents, safari booking confirmations, and vaccination certificates.
A quality power bank keeps your phone and camera charged since electricity may be limited in remote camps.
Pack light since most lodges offer laundry service. Bring a small daypack for game drives and a headlamp for early mornings. Contact Bush and Boujee Safaris for a personalized packing list based on your specific safari itinerary.
